Blog 19: Senior Project and ESLRs

1.  What ESLR have you excelled in most in your senior project? 

• Effective I-Poly Citizen

2.  Please explain why you think you have excelled in this ESLR.

• Not only have I met the requirements for the number of service learning hours needed, but have more than triple what was asked for. My entire senior project mentorship, being a police explorer, revolves around community service. From working the Rose Bowl to working at Christmas charity events for the less fortunate of my city, I have done much to give back. Through my time at the academy for my mentorship, I have learned the importance of deadlines, being punctual, and always being respectful. 

3.  Provide evidence from your senior project to support your claim (evidence is a photo of something you are doing, photo of something you made, etc).

Blog 18: 2 Hour Meeting Answer 3

1) How can an officer best handle a life-threatening situation?

2) The proper and efficient use of police equipment will keep an officer out of harm's way.

• Knowing how your equipment works, from radios to your service weapon, will protect you from danger since that is one of their purposes. 
• Anything an officer carries on him is meant to help him and victims, so the greater amount of knowledge they have on each will allow them to use their equipment more effectively.
• Today's criminals are becoming more dangerous as they aquire more powerful tools of destruction, so any advantage over them must always be used, and in this case that is the proper and efficient use of police equipment.

5) I plan to get more experience with all the police equipment at my disposal at my mentorship. This ranges from becoming more proficient with radios and radio codes to knowing how to perform first aid and CPR. My test to see how effective improved knowledge with such things will be an evaluation on how much they help me out on my ride alongs with the officers.

1) How can an officer best handle a life-threatening situation?

2) Effective communication with fellow officers will best help an officer handle a life-threatening situation.

• Communication is key to teamwork with your partners in the field.
• Effective communication neccessary to working with other police departments, especially in large scale operations.
• Proper relay of orders to suspects can cause them to surrender peacefully.

4) My time at the STARS academy and at my post have given me insight into making this one of my answers.

5) I plan to continue my study of answer 2 by doing in the field work with my post and analyzing how to make communication the most effective.

Blog 10: Senior Project Update

1) What are you currently doing in your indepedent component?

• I am still attending the STARS Explorer Academy in order to graduate as a Police Explorer. In the most recent class we had, we learned self defense tactics from a professional that trains the actual sheriffs dupties. We also had a lecture on the "Use of Force" by law enforcement.

2) What is a recent piece of research (article, interview, or audio-visual) that have you reviewed you would say was significant in helping you understand where to go next in your senior project?  The piece of research should be something you reviewed in November.  Please explain what you learned and where are you going next because of this piece of research.

• During one of the classes I had at the STARS center, we were given a lecture on the duties as a Police Explorer which would include working details and going on "Ride-a-longs" with officers. Seeing as my essential question involves looking for the best way an officer can deal with high stress situations both professionaly and ethically, getting hands on experience with such situations will help me find the answer.

Blog 2: Topic Choice

A. My senior topic is on Law Enforcement because it is a career choice I am considering to follow in the future. The fact that an officer of the law leaves his residence everyday knowing that that day could be his last is nothing less than inspiring. For this reason and a couple more, I’ve always considered wanting to be a part of team that works day and night to keep the people safe. If I did pursue law enforcement as a career, I would want to work my way up to being a detective in either homicide or vice. By devoting this year to exploring this topic, I will be able to make the decision of whether or not law enforcement is for me.

B.

iPoly Citizen: I plan to work with my fellow Police Explorers in a team to give back to the community by serving at the community events that they oversee. In the Police Explorers “You never leave your partner behind” and “No one person can accomplish everything on his own”. These very values are at the core of their training and this will make me a better I-Poly citizen as I take on a new understanding of what teamwork truly is.

Effective Communicator: I plan to learn how to communicate effectively with others in high pressure situations such as the police scenarios the Explorers practice. During a situation, an officer needs to be able to communicate with his team and dispatch so that the proper information that could save lives is sent out. Improving on communication with the Explorers will do much to make me a greater effective communicator.

Effective Learner: I plan to become a more effective learner by undergoing the rigors of the Police Explorer Academy where I will be placed in a very intense learning atmosphere. On the days I attend the academy, from 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M., I will be expected to put my all into understanding all the information they throw at us while also being prepared for any sort of pop quiz or test they feel they want to give us that day. All that I take from my learning at the academy will help me to be a more effective learner.

Effective User of Technology: I plan to become a more effective user of technology by learning how to utilize the technology the police use to keep peace, from items such as radios to all the different components inside a patrol vehicle. Once I acquire this information and complete the academy, I will be able to go on ride-alongs with the officers where I will assist him while he is on patrol.
